MADD Tennessee
To stop drunk driving, to support the
victims of this violent crime and to prevent underage drinking.
The History and the Facts
MADD was founded in 1980 when two women suffered irrevocable
losses. One womans teenage daughter was killed by a
drunk driver who had just been released on bail for another
drunk driving charge. The second womans
daughter became the youngest quadriplegic in American history
after being struck by a drunk driver. From opposite sides
of the country, these women started Mothers Against
Drunk Driving.
MADD has over 600 chapters and affiliates nationwide and a
presence in all 50 states.
Since its inception, MADD has helped to save about 300,000
lives and reduced the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities
by about 40%. Across the nation MADD has been instrumental
in passing thousands of anti-drunk driving laws. Still, around
17,000 people are killed in alcohol-related crashes annually
and an estimated 500,000 are injured. Each of these deaths
and injuries is 100% preventable.
MADD Tennessee, chartered in 1990, has Community Action Sites
(make a link to this section) across the state and serves
all 95 counties in Tennessee.
